NEW BOOK - by Don LaRose - Now Available
Finding Jesus in the Old Testament (the Jewish Scriptures) Discovering the Jewish Roots of Your Faith
When Jesus, the Jewish Messiah, was on this earth, the respected Rabbi taught about Himself from the Old Testament (there was no New Testament at the time). After His resurrection, He said to His disciples, "O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Messiah to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory? And beginning at Moses and the prophets, He expounded unto them in all the Scriptures (the Jewish Scriptures) the things concerning Himself" (Luke 24:25-27). Your Christian faith is built upon the Jewish Tanakh (the Old Testament). Therefore we should be able to go through the Jewish Scriptures and find Jesus virtually everywhere. That is exactly what we do in Finding Jesus in the Old Testament (the Jewish Scriptures).
We go through the Old Testament book by book, as they were arranged in the time of Jesus (The Law, the Prophets and the Writings). They are the same books we have in our Christian Old Testaments, but in a slightly different order.
Did you know that at one place in Genesis, the prophecy is made that the Messiah would come before Israel lost its genealogies, and before they lost their right to make laws and carry out capitol punishment. The genealogies were lost in 70 AD with the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple. According to the Jewish Talmud, the right to make laws and carry out capitol punishment was taken away by the Romans about 40 years before the destruction of the Temple. That is exactly when Jesus was crucified.
One of the Old Testament prophets wrote that from the time the decree went out to rebuild Jerusalem and the Temple, it would be 483 years until the Messiah would be "cut-off." That would bring us up to Aviv 14th (April 7th) 30 AD - the very time Messiah died for the sins of the world.
Did you know that ancient rabbis did not have a problem with God having a Son? Judaism had a problem with God having a Son only after Jesus came claiming to be both the Son of God, and the Promised Messiah. There are many references to God the Father in the Old Testament. There are also references to God the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament. But did you know that there are also passages which speak of God the Son - one in the Psalms, one in Proverbs and several in the prophets? There is even a passage in the Old Testament in which God the Father is speaking to His Son.
Everything Jesus taught came from the Old Testament. He quoted or referred to the Old Testament 300 times in the Gospels.
